How to Prepare Your Driveway for a Dumpster Delivery

A little preparation before your dumpster delivery saves time, prevents damage, and ensures the dumpster lands exactly where you want it. Most delivery issues we encounter across Danville, Avon, Brownsburg, and Plainfield are easily avoidable with a few minutes of prep work.

Our delivery trucks use a roll-off system that slides the dumpster off the back of the truck onto your driveway. This requires a clear, straight path with adequate overhead clearance. Here's everything you need to do before we arrive.

The delivery truck needs approximately 60 feet of straight clearance to safely place your dumpster. Before delivery day, clear the following:

• Vehicles: Move all cars, trucks, trailers, and motorcycles out of the driveway and off the street in front of your home
• Recreational items: Basketball hoops, bikes, scooters, and toys should be moved to the side
• Trash and recycling bins: Move curbside bins away from the delivery area
• Garden items: Potted plants, garden hoses, decorative stones, and lawn ornaments near the driveway edge

Walk the path from the street to your planned dumpster location and remove anything that could obstruct the delivery truck's approach.

Roll-off delivery trucks raise their bed to slide the dumpster off. This means you need vertical clearance as well as ground-level space:

• Power lines: Low-hanging electrical lines are the most common overhead obstruction. If lines cross your driveway at low height, let us know when you book.
• Tree branches: Trim any branches that hang over the driveway below 14 feet
• Garage overhang: If your garage roof extends over the driveway, the dumpster may need to be placed farther back from the garage door
• Awnings and carports: Temporary structures over the driveway will need to be removed or avoided

A loaded dumpster is heavy, and protecting your driveway surface prevents cosmetic damage:

• Asphalt driveways: In summer heat, a heavy dumpster can leave impressions in soft asphalt. Place plywood boards (at least 3/4-inch thick) under the dumpster's contact points.
• Concrete driveways: Generally handles dumpster weight well, but older or thin concrete may crack. Boards add an extra layer of protection.
• Paver driveways: Individual pavers can shift or crack under concentrated weight. Plywood boards distribute the load across a wider area.
• Gravel driveways: Dumpsters work fine on gravel, though the container may settle slightly. This is common throughout rural areas of Hendricks County and Putnam County.

Think about where the dumpster will be most useful during your project:

• Close to the work area: If you're renovating a kitchen, place the dumpster near a side door or window for easy debris tossing
• Accessible for loading: Leave at least 3 feet of walking space around the dumpster's loading door (rear swing door)
• Away from utilities: Don't block water meters, gas meters, electrical panels, or fire hydrants
• Visible to the pickup truck: The driver needs clear access from the street on pickup day too, not just delivery

• The driver will assess the placement area for safety and clearance
• The truck backs into position and hydraulically lowers the dumpster onto your driveway
• The driver confirms placement with you (if you're home) and checks for any concerns
• The entire process typically takes 10–15 minutes
